Match the tracker to the asset Not every piece of kit deserves the same unit. Group yours into three bands: High-value, mains/engine power: tractors, telehandlers, combines, sprayers. These have a 12V supply, so a hardwired tracker reports as often as you like with no battery worry. Mid-value, no power: trailers, generators, bowsers, livestock handling units. Battery or solar tags, reporting a few times a day. Low-value, high-volume: implements, ploughs, toppers, feeders, gates. Cheap tags where you mainly want to know "is it still on the holding?" Spending tractor-grade money on a £400 topper makes no sense — and a £25 tag on a £120k combine is negligence the underwriter will notice. 4G cellular: precise, frequent, signal-dependent A 4G tracker uses the mobile network the same way your phone does, so it gives near-real-time position and frequent updates — ideal the moment a high-value machine moves unexpectedly. Reporting: seconds to minutes; live tracking during a theft in progress. Coverage: strong near villages and main roads, weak in valleys, woodland and remote hill ground. A multi-network roaming SIM (falling between EE, O2 and Vodafone) closes most gaps. Battery: the cost of frequent reporting. Hardwired units are fine; battery-only 4G tags last weeks to a few months, not years. Cost: £8–£15 per SIM per month plus the platform, so it adds up across a large estate. For anything you'd chase down the A-road at 3am, 4G is the right call. LoRaWAN: long battery life, sparse signal of your own LoRaWAN sends tiny low-power messages over long distances to a gateway you install yourself — typically on a barn or grain store roof. One gateway can blanket several kilometres of open farmland. Reporting: less frequent (hourly or a few times a day) — enough to confirm presence, not to follow a live chase. Coverage: whatever your gateways reach. Brilliant across a contiguous holding; useless once kit leaves gateway range, so it doesn't follow a thief off the farm. Battery: the standout strength — tags run 2–5 years on a single cell. Cost: no per-tag SIM. The spend is the gateway (£500–£1,200) and cheap £30–£50 tags, so the per-asset cost falls fast at volume. LoRaWAN is the presence-and-inventory layer for your own land, not the recovery layer once something leaves it. Powered, battery or solar? Powered (hardwired): for engine-driven plant. Constant supply, frequent reporting, a backup cell so it keeps talking if the wiring is cut. Battery: for trailers and implements with no supply. Simple, but you'll change cells. Solar: the rural sweet spot for static off-grid assets — generators, water pumps, remote gates.
