A typical holding spreads across muddy yards, open grazing, isolated grain stores and gateways that nobody passes after dark — and most of it sits well beyond the reach of a mains socket or a broadband line. RuralCam is built for that reality. We pair solar 4G cameras over the yard and outbuildings with GPS collars on stock, low-power LoRa sensors in the sheds and across the fields, long-range HaLow cameras out to the boundary, and SMS controllers on gates and pumps. None of it needs a trench dug for power or a phone line run to the barn — it runs on sunlight and the mobile network, which is all most farms have.

What SIM and data plan does a farm setup need?
Our cameras and trackers aren't tied to a single carrier — they'll run on EE, Vodafone, O2 or Three, whichever has the best reach over your land. Bring a SIM you already trust locally, or take a pre-configured one from us. In practice a yard camera gets through 20 to 40 GB a month depending on how much it records and streams, while a livestock collar rarely touches 1 GB.
Because coverage on farmland is so often patchy, many of our cameras take two SIMs and switch to the backup network automatically the moment the main one drops — handy when a single mast serves the whole valley. We'll work out a sensible data allowance with you based on how many cameras you're running and how often you'll be checking in on the herd or the yard from the kitchen table.
Frequently asked questions
Our yard barely gets one bar of signal — will the cameras still work?
Often, yes. We survey the actual signal at your site before quoting and fit high-gain external aerials to pull in weak 4G where the cameras can't manage on their own. Where there's genuinely no mobile coverage, HaLow and LoRa kit run independently of the phone network entirely.
We have no broadband at the farm. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Every product on this page runs over 4G, LoRa or HaLow, so nothing depends on a fixed line. You won't be waiting months for Openreach or paying to trench a cable up the lane to the barn.
Can you put together a package for the whole farm?
Yes. Rather than sell boxes off a shelf we build a bundle around your holding — yard cameras, a few stock collars, a handful of shed sensors and gate control — and quote it as one job. Tell us what's costing you sleep and we'll spec it.
How disruptive is the install during a busy season?
A single solar camera or sensor is usually live in under an hour, with no electrician and no digging. A larger holding with several zones is typically a full day on site, and we'll work around milking, feeding and field work.
What protects the kit from weather, stock and thieves?
Everything is weather-sealed and built for life outdoors in a British winter. Cameras can be mounted out of easy reach with tamper alerts, footage is backed up off-site as it records, and we support warranty claims and help compile evidence for insurers if the worst happens.
Do I need planning permission to put cameras up?
On your own agricultural land it's generally fine. The one thing to check is where a camera points — if it overlooks a public road, a footpath or a neighbour's property, have a quick word with the local council about privacy obligations first.
Can I start small and add to it later?
That's how most farms do it. Begin with the yard and the fuel store, see how you get on, then add more cameras, collars or sensors onto the same system whenever you're ready. Nothing has to be bought all at once.
