WiFi HaLow (802.11ah) is a long-range wireless standard built for exactly the kind of distances a working farm or estate throws at you. Instead of the crowded 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands that fade out within fifty metres, HaLow runs in the sub-1GHz spectrum, so a single link can reach a camera a kilometre away across open ground. That lets you put eyes on a grain store, a stock yard or a gateway at the far end of the holding without digging a cable trench or paying for a SIM at every post. Each camera talks wirelessly back to a HaLow gateway, and that one gateway simply plugs into your broadband router at the house or main building (or a single 4G router where there's no broadband). The upshot is a low-power, wide-area network of wireless CCTV cameras that covers the whole site for the cost of one connection — with none of the monthly 4G SIM costs of putting a data plan on every camera.

How far will the signal really reach across my land?
On a clear line of sight, a HaLow camera can sit a kilometre from the gateway and still send a solid picture. Out on a real farm, though, barns, hedges, rising ground and machinery all eat into that, so plan on a more realistic 300 to 600 metres where there are obstacles in the way. Mounting the gateway high — on a grain tower, a gable end or a pole — and keeping it clear of thick walls and metalwork makes a noticeable difference to how far it carries.
If your holding is bigger than a single link can manage, the mesh does the heavy lifting: cameras hand the signal on through one another, stretching coverage building by building across the site. For an especially large estate or a cluster of scattered yards, you can also drop in extra gateways or relay nodes to bridge the dead spots and knit the whole place into one network.

Do I need broadband out at the camera?
No. Only the gateway needs an internet feed, and that can sit at the house or main shed on your existing broadband or a single 4G router. The cameras themselves just link wirelessly back to that gateway, so the far end of the farm needs no line at all.
How many cameras will one gateway run?
A typical gateway comfortably handles eight to sixteen cameras, with the exact figure depending on resolution and how much they record. If your holding is bigger than that, you simply add another gateway to take on the next cluster of buildings.
Is it a big job to install across the farm?
Not once the gateway is up. Because there's no cable to run between camera positions, fitting each unit is usually under twenty minutes — mount it, power it and let it find the mesh. Most of the work is choosing good high-up spots for a clean line of sight.
Will the signal get through barns and woodland?
HaLow penetrates walls, cladding and foliage far better than ordinary WiFi, so a treeline or steel-sided shed won't kill it the way they would normal kit. Very dense woodland or thick stone walls still cut the range, so an unobstructed line of sight always works best.
Can I add more cameras down the line?
Yes. The network is built to grow, so a new camera for a recently fenced field or a new building joins wirelessly whenever you're ready. Thanks to the mesh, it can even relay through existing cameras to reach spots the gateway can't see directly.
What happens to footage if the internet goes off?
Recording carries on regardless — each camera keeps writing to its SD card or to a network recorder while the line is down. You lose live remote viewing until broadband or 4G is back, but nothing that happened in the meantime is missed.
