Which SIM and data allowance suits a rural camera?
Any unlocked SIM on EE, Vodafone, O2 or Three will do the job. A typical solar camera gets through 10 to 50 GB a month, depending on how much it records and how often you pull up the live view from the kitchen. You can drop in your own rolling monthly SIM, or order one from us already set up and ready to slot in.
Some cameras take two SIMs and fail over automatically, jumping to a back-up network the moment the main one drops — handy when you're tucked in a valley or near a county border where one mast reaches further than another. While you're walking the site, hold up your phone on each network and note which gives the strongest bars before you commit to a SIM.

Will I need planning permission on the farm?
For everyday agricultural and domestic use you almost never do. Listed barns, scheduled monuments and conservation areas can be the exception, so have a quick word with your local planning office if the building is protected.
Which way should I point the solar panel?
Aim it due south if you can; south-east or south-west still gathers plenty of light. Give it a 30 to 40 degree tilt off flat to catch our low UK sun, and never let it face north.
What's in the toolkit for this job?
Nothing exotic — a drill, a set of spanners, a screwdriver, a spirit level and a few cable ties. The brackets, bolts and fixings you need usually arrive in the box with the camera.
How long will the whole job take me?
Most people have it watching the yard inside a couple of hours. Driving a pole adds a bit of graft over a simple wall bracket, but none of it calls for a tradesman.

How do I stop it being nicked from a remote field?
Fix it well out of easy reach, use the security screws supplied, and for an exposed gateway or lone shed consider a steel cage or a lockable housing over the top.
