On a remote site the connection is everything, and the only number that matters is the signal at the precise spot the camera will sit — not the yard, not the house. Check the bars there first, and if it's marginal don't write the location off: a high-gain external aerial mounted a metre or two higher will often turn one shaky bar into a steady link. Will solar really keep a camera running through a British winter?
Yes, provided the panel is sized for the job and faces roughly south with a clear sky. For heavily shaded or north-facing spots we'll spec a bigger panel or suggest a small mains run.
Can I use a SIM and data plan I already have?
Most cameras take any unlocked UK SIM, so you can drop in your own. For remote sites we usually recommend one of our roaming SIMs instead — they switch between networks automatically, which matters far more in the countryside than saving a few pounds on a single-network plan.
Do I need a fixed camera or a PTZ?
If you're covering one gate, door or track, a fixed camera does the job well and uses less power and data. If you want to watch a whole yard, paddock or compound and zoom in on movement, a pan-tilt-zoom head earns its keep — many can auto-track a person or vehicle across the scene.
How much data will a rural camera use each month?

How weatherproof does it need to be out in the open?
Look for at least an IP66 rating, and ideally IP67, with a metal housing rather than plastic. Rural cameras face driving rain, wind-blown muck and frost, so a properly sealed unit on a solid bracket will far outlast a cheap consumer camera meant for a back wall.
