Harvest turns a farm inside out. The combine that lives behind a locked door all winter now sleeps in an open field. The diesel bowser follows it out to the headland. Trailers run the same lane forty times a day with the yard gate propped open, the grain store fills faster than anyone can keep count, and every pair of hands is on the clock from first light until long after dark. It's the most productive fortnight of the year — and the thieves know the calendar as well as you do. Rural crime doesn't spread itself evenly through the seasons. The busiest weeks concentrate value and remove witnesses at the same time: more high-value kit outdoors than at any other point in the year, and a workforce too stretched and too tired to notice a vehicle that shouldn't be there. Securing harvest isn't about buying more of anything — it's about moving the watching to where the kit has moved, for the few weeks it's there. Harvest breaks two of its assumptions. First, the kit leaves the protected ground. The bowser that fuels it is parked alongside. Neither is inside any camera's view, because the field it's in wasn't worth watching last week and won't be next month. Second, the routine that makes odd movement obvious disappears. In February, a vehicle on the lane at 2am is an event. In harvest, machinery moves at all hours, contractors' pickups come and go, and grain lorries arrive on their own schedule. A strange flatbed idling by a gateway doesn't stand out — which is precisely why the organised gangs time their visits for now. The targets are the predictable ones, concentrated: GPS domes and screens off parked combines and tractors, diesel run off from field-edge bowsers and freshly filled tanks, quads left where the day ended, tools from a workshop left open because someone's coming straight back, and — at the top of the value list — the machines themselves. The yard: busier, more open, still the hub The yard doesn't empty at harvest — it opens up. Gates stand wide for trailer runs, the grain store door is open half the day, and the buildings that normally shield kit are full of grain instead. Keep the watching simple and fixed. Build it into the parking-up routine instead: Park machines together, nose-in near the watched gateway — one camera covering three machines beats three machines scattered behind three hedges. Strip or lock down GPS domes overnight where practical; they're the fastest-moving target of the lot.
